Christmas by Candlelight with Zeb Soanes

Zed Soanes welcomes you into the historic St Martin-in-the-Fields church in the heart of London for a traditional carol concert. St Martin’s Voices and conductor Andrew Earis present a programme of festive favourites, from ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’ to ‘O Holy Night’, alongside readings of works by favourite wordsmiths John Betjeman and Beatrix Potter, in a live recording for Classic FM.


Carols from St Paul’s Cathedral with Moira Stuart

From within London’s world-famous St Paul’s Cathedral comes a carol concert in aid of The Prince’s Trust, hosted by Moira Stuart. The St Paul’s Cathedral Choir and London Youth Choirs perform seasonal favourites, with a performance from pianist Jamie Cullum and festive readings from Sir Tony Robinson, Richard E Grant, and Dame Joanna Lumley.

Join Aled for an exclusive carol concert recorded live by Classic FM, in the serene setting of London’s oldest surviving church, St Bartholomew-the-Great. Rupert Gough conducts the Choir of Great St Bartholomew in special arrangements of favourite carols, with star performances by Konya and Braimah Kanneh-Mason, and Aled Jones. Joining them will be Classic FM presenters Ritula Shah and Anne-Marie Minhall, for some poetry readings.

The Christmas Story with Stephen Fry

Actor, broadcaster, and national treasure Stephen Fry joins Classic FM for a Christmas special in 2023. He narrates a new retelling of the nativity story, accompanied by a sweeping film soundtrack from composer Thomas Hewitt Jones.

This coming Sunday, RRR will be broadcasting from the North Pole as Roy (aka the Shellac Shack Santa) digs through his sack of goodies for a few gift-wrapped Christmas 78s from the crates. No shaking the parcels though. No peeking at the playlist. Rest assured, you’ll be hearing some fine Hillbilly, Jazz, Mambo, Novelty, Jump Blues, Doo-Wop, Country, and Pop 78s of the Festive kind.

OK, well, we can sneak a peek at ONE little present. It’s a hep 1954 Country updating of the old “Twas The Night Before Christmas” poem from the Davis Sisters. This red-hot platter qualifies as some serious Hillbilly Bop with Chet Atkins joining Skeeter and BJ on echo-drenched guitar for “The Christmas Boogie”. Guaranteed to get your Christmas stocking rockin’.

The Yuletide spin begins this coming Sunday, December 17th, 2 PM, Mountain, on donor supported CKUA Radio. Dial in and groove to the sounds of some Christmas 78s from the crates on Rooooy’s Record Room, the show that repeats the sounding joy.

The Ballad of the Brown King

Dr. Louise Toppin, a preeminent performer and scholar specializing in the concert repertoire of African American composers, presents the world premiere recording of Margaret Bonds’s The Ballad of the Brown King (Avie Records, 2018). With a libretto by Langston Hughes, this Christmas cantata focuses on Balthazar, the dark-skinned king who journeyed to Bethlehem to witness the birth of Jesus Christ. This gorgeous work is beautifully interpreted by New York City-based The Dessoff Choirs and Orchestra, soloists soprano Laquita Mitchell, mezzo-soprano Lucia Bradford and tenor Noah Stewart, with Malcolm J. Merriweather at the podium.


Winter Holidays around the World w/ Bill McGlaughlin

Winter holidays are celebrated around the world, and their music is wonderful to hear, regardless of which tradition you observe. This spirited selection starts in the 12th century with Nova Stella, medieval Italian Christmas music from Saint Francis of Assisi’s staging of the nativity; jazz pianist Dave Brubeck’s classical composition La Fiesta de la Posada, evoking a Mexican Christmas celebration; and Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on Christmas Carols. We will enjoy this time of year in Paris with music from Debussy, and then travel to Polynesia for a traditional hymn, Anau Oia Ea. And then ending with an excerpt from Gian Carlo Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors from the original television production.
